Rooks control
CABWIM is the first and only consultancy that has proven to be able to move rooks in a sustainable and directed way to an alternative nesting location. The nuisance is solved for instance in the Dutch parishes Hoogeveen, Vledder, Heerenveen and De Wolden. The method needs tailored measures, fitting to both the parish and the routines of the local rook colony. CABWIM has specialized in recognizing these in short term, finding an appropriate alternative and in putting the local information together into a sustainable and lasting solution to the nuisance that rooks may cause.
The best time to do the local analysis is during the nestbuilding period. After a local assessment and guidance of the parish, further coaching can be provided at long distance. The process of moving the birds starts in autumn.
CABWIM is looking forward to collaboration with parishes in order to assist them, but also with researchers who are interested in (1) understanding how variation in selection of nesting material comes about (2) how selection of nesting material differs from tool use, (3) what mechanisms explain clustering within a colony and (4) relations between changes in nest site selection and changes in predator distribution (in particular of goshawk and pine marten).

The moving can succeed only if the alternative is also acceptable for the local rooks (and they are very picky!): rooks occupy nests that are attached to the trees. The arrow shows the sawn branch of the replaced nest (the other nest was replaced too)
Spontaneous (!) assembly of rooks at the alternative nesting location (here along a highway) in the new season
